If you just unpacked your PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, or Nintendo Switch in your college dorm room and tried connecting to the campus Wi-Fi, you were probably hit with one of two brick walls:

"[Your University] device registration portal"(common systems include ClearPass Guest, Aruba Device Registration, or Cisco ISE). - Sign in using your university username and password.
- Click "Add Device" or "Register New Device".
- Enter your console's 12-character MAC address.
- In the device description, label it clearly (e.g.,
PS5-Dorm-Room). - Set the device type to Game Console.
- Click Submit or Enable.
Once registered, turn on your console, connect to the student IoT or guest network, and it will bypass the captive portal login screen automatically.
Method 2: The Hidden PS5 Web Browser Trick (When There Is No Device Portal)
If your college forces all devices onto a single guest network with a web captive portal and does not offer a MAC registration portal, you can trigger the PS5's hidden internal web browser to force the login screen to load.
Because Sony removed the standalone web browser app from the PS5 home screen, access it through the system documentation backdoor:

- Change DNS Settings from Automatic to Manual.
- Set Primary DNS to
178.62.228.110(or192.241.137.64). - Leave Secondary DNS blank or
0.0.0.0, and click OK. - Select Connect to Network. A browser window will force-load to the Google search bar. Type in your campus login URL (e.g.,
wifi.yourcollege.edu), log in, and then return your DNS settings back to Automatic.
Method 3: The Windows 11 / Mac Mobile Hotspot Bridge
If your campus strictly runs eduroam with zero IoT networks, and the captive portal tricks fail, your Nintendo Switch and older consoles literally cannot connect directly due to hardware encryption limits.
The solution is to use your laptop as a bridge: connect your laptop to eduroam, and broadcast a private Wi-Fi hotspot from your laptop to your console.
On Windows 11 / 10:
Windows Settings ➔ Network & Internet ➔ Mobile Hotspot
- Under "Share my internet connection from", select Wi-Fi (your active eduroam connection).
- Under "Share over", select Wi-Fi.

- On your Nintendo Switch or PS5, search for networks, select
Dorm-Room-Hotspot, and connect.
Because your PC has already handled the 802.1X enterprise security handshake with eduroam, it broadcasts a clean, standard WPA2-Personal signal that any game console can connect to without errors.

If your dorm room has an active RJ-45 Ethernet jack on the wall, always use a wired connection over Wi-Fi:
